A fake smile or A fake feeling?

fake_smile___real_tears____by_t0xicallyWhen i am walking through the crowd, on my way to the rail/metro station, which seems to be rushing in all possible coordinates, seeing the expressions on the faces of people makes me think whether they  portray their true feelings. Its not actually so. People tend to put on fake expressions to hide their true feelings, afraid what the society might think if they release their true feelings. Man has lost trust toward fellow men. And what has become of us is this. However bad a person might be feeling, he’ll greet others with a fake smile. Is it needed? Can’t he share what he really feels. Similarly, what one says does not necessary mean what one feels. For example, when you go to someone’s house and they greet you by saying, “Good that you came” they might actually mean “Why did you have to come today?” Saying “Good bye and do come again” might not necessarily carry the meaning of the phrase. It might actually mean “Good riddance to you.” A laugh that people give with what you tell them might actually be symbolic of the bare fangs of a snake. By laughing with you and showing their teeth they might actually mean please stop this non sense or else we’re gonna sting… Man has become the biggest hypocrite against himself. A person who shows his true feelings everywhere is considered a stupid. Easy to call one by that name rather than calling another a hyprocrite, rite? But has all this hypocrisy led to a better society. I bet NOT. The greetings of others have lost the warmth that should be associated with them. People have lost faith in mankind on the whole. The sole essence of expressions has been totally lost because what one seems on the outside is not necessarily what one is inside…

So to move on in today’s world, even I put on a fake smile and claw my way through this masquerading crowd. Hiding what i feel about others, the hatred which i bear, the love which I carry, the music in my head, the rhythm in my soul and yet the ache in my heart… Whats the use showing it to a crowd inspired by fake feelings anyways?

Its easy to get cynical and go over the edge with one’s generalisations, especially with the “Man has become…” bit. The world, in a sense, exists only as you want to see it. Beyond a point, the existence of anyone else can be argued to be irrelevant.

Why do you let your mind’s construct of the world make you its slave?(I’m referring to the last few lines of the post)

dude, that optimism thing didn’t work here too well… seeing the world as a happy place and all the people a lot better doesn’t make it the same.. i just generalized it as i have really experienced a lotta this shit happening around… again as i always say, they are my feelings… you might totally feel the other way that this world is all harmonious and all and that the people are lovely around making merry… what i expressed are just my feelings which have increased over the past few weeks :)
and the comments are just what other feel about it… all personal feelings you see

      (like the name :P )

that thing abt this hypocrisy probably not leading to a better society… i wont be so sure about that.

for eg: you smile politely to a person in greeting, even if you are not happy to see him/her, perhaps because you want to preserve at least some sense of civility in your relationship… because at that point of time, maybe you are not interested in fighting with that person, which would be wasteful to your time and productivity, or maybe you feel you might have some use for that person in the future, and you want to be in a position to be able to ask for help… or whatever reason. good manners, though hypocritical at times, are good for a reason… they enable you to function well and be productive in the society… does it hurt you to be polite? not really… i guess the magnitude of hypocrisy matters. the other person understands that low level hypocrisy may be expected, and despite not reading too much into it, is able to use that hypocrisy for his own advantage even. but a high level one is a somewhat different story.

the genesis of this “shit” you are talking about is pretty interesting… its relative you know… so maybe leo baba is right… maybe a real attempt at paradigm shift could go a long way… but of course, every one is entitled to his/her own opinions.

hey kalyani… nice to see you here too :)
i agree with you on that it can be useful for both the sides likely… but again.. it falls back to the same question? Why do this? why not be without all this ‘emotional make-up’??? a paradigm shift won’t let me think this way… just as i said, its the way i feel sometimes…
but i do get that it can help and does help by being falsely polite, but still, it makes us lose our sense of originality, the way all are different and makes us behave like mere automatically adjusting masks…

  8. July 22, 2009 at 6:08 pm | #14

does it really? it doesnt make me feel like i am losing my originality, at least… maybe because this is like a spinal reflex to me… to smile in greeting. it does not mean anything to my cerebrum. so there is no question of originality or lack thereof… all it’s doing is helping me…

and to broadcast your feelings has it’s other downsides as well. maybe broadcasting is actually intruding on others’ privacy as well. maybe they are simply not interested in your opinions abt them. and by shouting them by way of mannerisms, expressions or speech is equivalent to thopofying your opinions on them. i think the best way is to just be normal, well mannered… and tell the truth about your opinions if anyone asks, wording it as neutrally as possible…

and by the way, hey! :)

well, it doesn’t make you feel that way coz you might be putting all your medical fundas into the already complex thing :)
i wrote what i feel… i do feel a loss of originality every time this occurs. I know it has to be done to keep a mutual peace but its occurring at what cost? the next time we meet them, again the same thing follows. Are we acting like we were meant to be?

and btw hey again… hows collg going??? :)

  10. July 24, 2009 at 6:05 pm | #16

ok, just out of interest… how are we meant to be? and who decides how we are meant to be? and how is this person or whatever deciding how we are meant to be? whats the rationale, the basic idea? in your opinion.

college is fine… the new sem is real hard and fun… what abt you? looks like your internship has been a lot of fun. and btw, i love kolkata too :)

      July 24, 2009 at 6:34 pm | #17

as far as i know, the originality lies in not being fake… thats how we were meant to be… not to merge into one common fake character… Ok, i might get very philosophic here, but thats what the truth is- ask your soul… question your heart, what we’re meant to be lies within us… in other words you are made in a unique way by your creator/science(if you don;t believe in the concept of God)… thats what decides what one is meant to be… posing in the fake manner only diminishes that very uniqueness…

and yeah… the 2 months in kolkata were a great experience for me… learnt a lot apart from the training stuff :)
and gimme ur gtalk id if any…

  11. July 25, 2009 at 1:10 pm | #19

how does it hurt if you lose your uniqueness? if you become fake? i mean, what is the real, basic idea? why does your heart tell you to be original or unique? and since i do not believe in god, and naturally the idea of an intelligent evolution, why do you think we have been made to mean something? why cant we be just there, meaninglessly… and if you believe in god, why do you think god decided to give you a meaningful life? i think i know the answers, but i wonder what your opinion is.

u can definitely exist meaninglessly… even i believe in evolution more than in God but the thing i am talking about does not concern this stuff… you might feel comfortable with this meaningless existence in a fake make up… but i am sure there are a zillion others who feel against this deep down somewhere… like i was feeling that day… which made me write this… i’m sure…
