Science City, Kolkata

went to the science city in Kolkata today evening… pretty huge with some really fancy stuff esp. the mirror maze in which i almost got lost and could see atleast a 20 MEs in there…

another really cool thing was the one in which i am in this pic… It was a really simple trick… the box in which we had to enter was painted just like the ambeiece so that our lower part of the body got camouflaged by the box itself with the impression that we were really on the platter and what it projected was this really cool thing… ABCD0007

A local railway station in Kolkata…

So now, i get the taste of local trains… When rushing traffic automatically pushes you into the compartment and the IMG_6861_20070926same rush pushes you out at the other station, it is then that you have tasted the flavor of local trains and local stations. Now a station in Kolkata is characterized by the following features:

1. Raging crowd in all the directions.

2. Tea being sold in a plastic cup not bigger than the jelly thing we used to eat when small.

3. People speaking Bengali, even the hint of which i don’t get and all it seems to me is sheer animation.

4. Trains coming with people hanging from them as if they are on a suicidal spree.

5. Not a single cold-drink/mineral water shop(except in Sealdah).

6. Hundreds of shops which sell bags. (who the hell is gonna buy bags daily you morons???)

7. People stinking with sweat since the very morning… thanks to the humidity which remains here 24×7.

8. Eager faces waiting for the next local so that they can kill each other and the winner can get on it.— its like people becoming animals at they very faintest sound of the horn of the arriving local…

well… thats what i’ll be experiencing for the next 50 days too…

amen

Eyes of the Bong-Girl…

May 25, 2009 Sahil Katyal 2 comments

Eyes_slide_showA jam-packed road in Kolkata followed by over crowded streets branching out from them like those of a banyan tree with zillions of leaves. And hundreds of people in those streets staring at me. But one such stare felt like a glorious glare. Those pair of the most beautiful eyes standing apart from the rest, illuminated by the darkness that surrounded. Those two fixed stars in close proximity of each other, the glow of one doubled by that of the other.

Those were the most elegant pair of eyes, carved with utmost care and love. The most beautiful eyelashes, casting their beauty each time they flickered as if purposely posing the charm they beheld. The carefully lined mascara helping the promising passion trapped inside to burgeon. Was I the only one hypnotized or had others already been, and by now, were used to them? Was i the only one hungry and craving for a more longer look at them? In no time the face had disappeared amidst the hustle-bustle of the daily Kolkata life. All that remained was the unique charm they had captured me in and a hazy picture in my memory of them still looking at me with utmost likeness…

Finally, in Kolkata… :D

A smooth ride from Chandigarh to Delhi takes less than 4 hours while reaching the IGI airport takes around 3 torturous hours. Yeah, that’s the traffic situation in Delhi.  Reached the airport in time somehow (credit goes to dad’s decision of starting early from home). Soon, the gas-guzzling jet is soaring above the clouds. By the time I am  flying above Kolkata, its completely dark and the night lights of the over crowded city sparkle and twinkle beneath me, bewildering me in utter amazement and leaving me wondering upon the aerial beauty it poses. In less than 2 hours I am in Kolkata ?.
Upon calling up dad, I get to know that he has just managed to leave Delhi. Now that is really cool. The traffic in the capital entangles you and traps you in it for longer than the time in which you can travel 1400 kilometers by air.  After collecting my belongings, and getting outta the airport I realize that what a city Kolkata is. It is monstrous. Totally different from all the places I have been in. The place where I am staying is around 20-25 km from the airport. The journey till there was like hopping amidst cars. The bhaiya who came to receive really knows driving. Never seen someone drive like that. There were cars to the left, to the right and God knows if they were even above us. And when I was so damn sure that the guy to the left had rammed on to us, bhaiya swiveled our car to the right just at the right time. Now that’s what I call reflexes. Driving between repeating patterns of lakes and land on either sight of the road made it feel as if we were oscillating between land and water again and again. Soon, after making way through traffic which seemed to be fighting a battle, with the whole of it against us, we reached our place. Here I am in Kolkata, for the next 2 months. Hoping for happening stuff to write about.

alrite… here i am again… packing was one big fuss yet again… “How can we pack the whole frickin room in a single trunk and that too in just a few hours?”, as rightly quoted by RA. But yes, we have to do it and so we did. It was like all the world’s labour in a day, in 6 goddamn hours. You out this thing in the trunk, and you forget that… then you put that thing in too and its then that you realize that the first thing that you put in had to be put in the bag to be taken home… and then all that you can hear yourself say is an “AAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH”… rummaging through all the mess created by our continuous efforts over the complete semester. The cobwebs, the uniformly accumulated dirt, the chocolate and chips wrappers, the littered cold drink PET bottles… all come to sight at the same time, as if they had been eluding for so long… it was then that i realized that YO was right when he reminded me of the wrappers… finally the packing is done… but getting the overweight trunk down the staircase is no joke. It takes dedicated parterships… its like, if one guy fails, the others fall… so the trunks are carefully brought down and transported to the new hostels, the place which after 3 long months would become the new place for us to throw open our luggages and begin the littering process again…

Now, i am back home… Good food, family and old friends are here… moreover, it rained today… the first great rain of the season.. it was lovely, just don;t wanna sleep tonight, the weather is so good… feel like going out at 1 AM, running across the streets, the wind gushing across my face and making me forget the torturous summers, a lot of which have passed by, and the greater amount of which yet has to come….

2 days later, i’ll be in kolkata… 1470 kms from where i started just a week ago… this month started with the bitchy exams and will end with me having travelled across the breadth of India :)

from 333031 to 160022 to 700001 in just 10 days… phew!!! its gonna be a long and tiring month… hoping for a great PS at TEXMACO…

Roasted Alive

May 2, 2009 Sahil Katyal 4 comments

Now, when you are in a place which records the highest temperature in India for that day, its really worth mentioning. 48.2 degrees celsius is no joke. You need a place like Pilani to achieve such drastic conditions. When brain activities tend to cease and the body is put to siege, then you can tell that its really 48.2. Reported on all the weather portals on 1st of May, the temperature increased from 47.1 degrees celsius (no joke either;8 bloody degrees above normal) on 29th of April to 48.2 on the first day of May. You wake up in the morning and your head is swirling, trying to adapt to the new extraordinarily HIGH temperature. The fans help only in sending gushes of hot air straight onto the face. You open the door, and you feel the wrath of the natural barbeque ready to roast you. The room is a furnace. The heat is so intense that you drop a mug full of water from a 10 feet height, and it evaporates before hitting the ground!!! You drink around 20 litres of water daily, and still your throat is all quenched and craving for more. A walk from the room to the water cooler feels like a walk in the sands for miles, in search of water. You feel lighter each day, as if a part of you has been sucked by the evil sun. You stink in sweat whole day no matter how many times you have a bath. Your body develops extra space for cold drinks and you gulp them down in quantities unimaginable. You count the days left before the finals end and you go back home, go back to conditions favorable for mankind.

Inspite of the places like churu, pokhran and others in Rajasthan which are known for their high temperatures, Pilani was well above 4-5 degrees from all of them. If it wasn’t for the IPC(which has air conditioning), my skin would have melted by now… plus these gruesome exams… all’s against our favor. They expect us to give exams in 48.2 bloody degrees celsius when our brain refuses to function at all. Now what do we do? Sitting for 3 shitty hours in the examination hall, counting each minute passing by while the heat tortures us…

And i dunno where i am getting to now… Brain getting affected once again… but all i know is, we, BITSians are part of history now. Hottest temperature in the whole country on 1st May, and we surrrrrvived it :D
